Brain Tumor Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause for its happening is actually unknown. Possible risks associated to its occurrence include exposure to radiation, cigarette smoking, and some inherited medical conditions.

Stages of Brain Tumor

Grade is a better term used to refer to how likely the tumor will grow and spread to other parts of the body:

  • Grade 1 – In this stage, it grows slowly and the survival rate or prognosis of the patient is relatively high.
  • Grade 2 and 3 – They can spread to nearby tissues and may be recur despite removal.
  • Grade 4 – stage 4 tumors are considered the most dangerous and can spread to other body parts such as the spinal cord.

 Brain Tumor Signs & Symptoms

Apparently, the symptoms that manifest on a person are actually dependent on the actual size of the mass as well as how far it has spread. But generally, some of the most common indicator of a possible tumor in the brain includes:

  • Headache
  • Seizure
  • Vision disturbance
  • Alteration in the person’t mental functions
  • Weakness
  • Sleepiness
  • Changes in senses
  • Loss of sensation in the extremities

When these symptoms are seen, several tests may be done to confirm the diagnosis. Your physician may ask you to undergo CT scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), EEG, and biopsy.

How to Treat Brain Tumors

Treatment options vary from one case to another such as the size of the mass and the patient’s health.  Generally though, cures for the condition include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and use of drugs. The methods of treatment usually go side by side to further eliminate the tumor.

Medication treatment wise, corticosteroids are usually prescribed to prevent swelling. Diuretics will also help flush out fluid build up which causes pressure and swelling on the brain. Anticonvulsants are the choice for seizure activities.

Other part of the treatment plan includes providing comfort to the sufferer to alleviate any pain and discomfort in the course of sickness. Therefore, there are also a lot of support groups that the sufferer and the family can join to cope with the condition easily.

Prevention of Brain Cancer

We can’t rest assured that cancer cells won’t go uncontrollably, however by employing some measures such as living a healthy lifestyle like smoking cessation and proper stress management, we can somehow halt or prevent the development of not just brain cancer but as well as any other cancers.
