If left untreated, anemia may pose a great danger to your health. Being anemic during pregnancy is also a common incident because of the growing baby’s needs for blood supply.

The following are the signs and symptoms of anemia:

  • Easy fatigability and total exhaustion
  • General weakness also connotes that a person might be suffering from anemia.
  • Shortness of breath during physical exertion is also an indication that a person may be suffering from this disease.
  • Inability to concentrate during a specific task is also a prime symptom of anemia.
  • Due to lack of hemoglobin, fainting spells are also experienced by a person suffering from the condition.
  • Amenorrhea (absence of menstrual period) or menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding) is yet among the symptoms of it.
  • Having pale skin accompanied with dark circles on their eyes because of lack of hemoglobin is also a telltale sign that you are anemic.  Anemic people also have light or bluish lip color.
  • A feeling of coldness in the extremities is also a way on how to know if you are anemic.  This is due to poor circulation as a result of this disease.

Treatment for Anemia

Once you’ve noticed the signs and symptoms attributed to this disease, consult your doctor immediately to further confirm the diagnoses.  Your doctor might prescribe you to take iron supplements.  Take the tablets with food to prevent nausea, but never take it with milk as it can delay the absorption of iron in your system.  or maximum results, it is advised to drink your iron tablets with Vitamin C for easier absorption.

Finally, to prevent anemia, be sure to consume a diet with iron rich foods. Foods that are high in iron include liver, red meats, eggs, green leafy vegetables, fruits (prunes, raisins, apricots), and dried beans.
