China or Tsina is a country that is very rich in culture and traditions.  It has a unique combination of old and modern lifestyles. Before you make any plans to visit the country, especially mainland China, you need to understand its immigration policies first. We’ll try to answer some of the frequently asked questions (FAQ) about visiting China.

Do I Need a Passport?

A passport is one major requirement for international travels. You cannot leave your country and you cannot enter a country without it. You have to make sure that the passport that you hold is valid for at least six months before your entry.

Do I Need a Visa?

You absolutely need an appropriate visa to enter China.  If you don’t have it, you are not allowed to travel to the said country. You will be fined and subject to immediate deportation.  For U.S. citizens, they are required to apply for a year-long multiple entry visa if you plan to re-enter China. If you plan to visit Macau and Hong Kong, this is needed. Use your U.S. passport if you are a dual-national U.S. citizen with a Chinese passport to avoid encountering immigration problems. The country does not recognize dual citizenships.

What Do I Need to Do Upon Arrival?

Upon arrival in China, you are expected to comply with the requirements of your visa.  If you have a tourist visa, you are not allowed to work.  If you are on work visa, you cannot be a full-time student.
