how to know when you are ovulatingOvulation usually occurs around 14 days following the first day of a woman’s menstrual cycle. But, not all women follow the same cycle.  Some women tend to have a 28 day cycle while others only have 20 days or even 35 days.  However, one thing remains constant and that is the period of ovulation.

If you are trying to get pregnant, it is important that you have an idea on how to know when you are ovulating.  The ovulation period increases the chances of getting pregnant that is why it’s good to have a background on this.  How to know when you are ovulating can be a simple method, but can be sometimes tricky as well. But don’t worry as most women show signs that they are ovulating.  All you need to do is to find them, know when you are at your most fertile,  and keep up-to date with the changes that their body makes and then they’re on their way to getting pregnant.

How to Know When You are Ovulating

  1. Chart your temperature. An increase in your basal body temperature (BBT) or your temperature when you’re completely at rest is a sign that you have ovulated. Check your BBT first thing in the morning. This requires you to take your temperature daily. You will notice that your BBT shift downwards before you ovulate and then suddenly spikes upwards. Women are most fertile 2-3 days before her BBT rises. It takes up to 2 days after ovulation for the progesterone to rise enough to raise your BBT sharply. It is better to chart your temperature to be able to detect your likely ovulatory period.
  2. Ovulation Cramping. This is commonly called mittleschmerz pain. Women experience this pain as a result of the actual release of an egg from an ovary. This achy feeling tends to radiate at the lower back at times. Not all women experience this pain, that’s why women should listen to their body and their more likely to get the message.
  3. Cervical Mucus increases. The amount of your cervical mucus increases and its texture as well. How can you tell if you are ovulating through your cervical mucus? Women are considered most fertile when the consistency of their discharge resembles an egg white.
  4. Ovulation Prediction Kits/ Ovulation Calculator. These devices test for the amount of a specific reproductive hormone in your urine. OPKs will pinpoint your ovulatory date by looking at your luteinizing hormones. Your LH is the last to hit its peak before ovulation occurs. There is also a lot of free Internet tool called the ovulation calculator which will help you find out when you’re likely to ovulate.

Using an ovulation calendar or other OPKs is more convenient to use, but using your body signals are also good and helpful for you on how to know when you are ovulating. So, good luck. We hope we’ve helped you pin down your big day!
