traveler's diarrheaOftentimes, people who travel and visit from temperate regions of the world suffer from Traveler’s diarrhea.  This illness is also otherwise known as giardia, but a number of colorful names have been used to describe the condition such as Montezuma’s Revenge, Delhi Belly, Turista, and a lot more.  It has been noted that the causes why people get this disease are when they eat food and drink water that contain germs especially in areas where the water isn’t clean which at times can progress to food poisoning.  Moreover, there are also causative agents that are believed to be the cause why this situation happens including – E.coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Giarida Lamblia, and Yersinia.  Traveler’s diarrhea is something that can spoil your vacation which is why one should take extra precautions when visiting areas with poor sanitation.  How to avoid traveler’s diarrhea?  Follow our prevention tips below.

How to Avoid Traveler’s Diarrhea

  • Plan carefully.  Consult your doctor before travelling and ask for medicine that can help you deal when this irksome situation arises. Medication treatment may include antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacin (Cipro), Loperamide, and Fluoroquinolone. Also, ask your doctor about prophylaxis like bismuth subsalicylate.
  • Stay away from eating foods and drinking beverages which can be purchased fro street vendors especially in unhygienic places.
  • Another way of preventing the situation to happen is by not eating raw or uncooked meat and seafood.
  • Never drink tap water, ice, unpasteurized milk, and other dairy products as they can increase the occurrence of the illness.
  • Consider carbonated beverages, hot coffee, beer, and wine, and bottled water as safe drinks.
  • If you want to eat raw fruits, make sure that you’ll be the one to peel them.
  • Women who are in their pregnancy stage including children should prevent dehydratio, so make sure that you rehydrate yourself often.
  • Always make sure that the food is served hot.
