The development of dry socket is thought to occur when either a blood clot has failed to form in the tooth socket which is the hole left after extracting the tooth or the blood clot has been dislodged.

This is the reason why it is important to learn the things that we can do to prevent / avoid dry socket after tooth removal.

Dry Socket Signs and Symptoms

  • The pain can be moderate to severe in intensity.
  • The patient may notice a foul odor.
  • Exposed bone is visible.

Treatment

  • You can take aspirin or ibuprofen to ease the discomfort.
  • The dentist will clean the tooth socket and then fill it with a special paste or medicated piece of gauze to speed up healing time.

Prevention Tips

  • Maintain a good oral hygiene before and during the healing period.  It is even better if you have your teeth cleaned days before your dental surgery.  People who have wisdom teeth pulled and have poor oral hygiene are likely to suffer from dry socket.
  • Avoid or stop smoking days before your surgery as it is a big factor for developing dry socket.
  • If you take contraceptive pills, ask your dentist about performing the surgery on a day when you are getting the lowest dosage of estrogen. Talk about other medications that you take that can interfere with blood clotting.
  • Eat or drink something cold for 24 hours after the extraction.
  • Avoid spitting until after 24 hours of extraction.
  • Avoid rinsing your mouth more than your doctor recommends. Use salt water when rinsing your mouth.
  • Keep your fingers and tongue away from the hole area to prevent irritating as it heals.
  • One of the best natural remedies is to pour a few drops of clove oil on a cotton ball and put it on the socket.
