What is Glucose ?

During the metabolism process, the sugar created when the carbohydrate in the diet is broken down is what we call glucose.  It is essential as it is absorbed by the cells in the body thus supplying the cells through the bloodstream to keep the body running.   The cells can’t use glucose without the aid of insulin or the hormone produced by the pancreas and released through the bloodstream once the glucose levels rise.

The normal  range for adults varies depending on what type of test they undergo.  To check you blood sugar level you can opt for:

• Fasting Blood Glucose Test – This is the most common type of test to check the glucose level in the blood.  A person isn’t supposed to eat anything for 8 hours. Usually, the test is taken in the morning. The normal values for fasting blood sugar is between 70-99 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.5 mmol/L)
• Post-Prandial Glucose Test – This test is scheduled 2 hours after the person has eaten his meal.  The normal value for this test should be lower than 140mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L)
• Random Blood Glucose Test – This type of test can actually be taken anytime during the day.  The normal  level in the blood should be less than 100mg/dL (less than 7.0 mmol/L)

With that, you need to seek your physician’s help if you think you have blood sugar disorder. Also, elevated levels are not just common in adults as this even happens for kids and teenagers which make it alarming for parents.
