How to Treat Hypoglycemia

How to Treat HypoglycemiaNormally, one’s blood glucose level ranges from 70 – 110mg/dL. When it falls lower than that though, the condition known to be as hypoglycemia arises.  Diabetic hypoglycemia characterized by low blood sugar level occurs among people with diabetes.  It sets in once there is too much insulin, yet not enough sugar in the blood.  Reactive hypoglycemia may also be present here.  Apparently, there are a lot of causes why the condition sets it.  Among them are:

  • Not eating enough carbohydrates
  • Excessive exercise without eating enough carbohydrates
  • Skipping meals / fasting
  • Taking too much insulin or diabetes drugs
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Pregnancy

Common Symptoms of Diabetic Hypoglycemia are:

  • Sweating
  • Lightheadedness
  • Shakiness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Blurring of the vision
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Confusion
  • Numbness around the lips and fingers
  • Hunger

Hypoglycemia may also occur among non-diabetics.  The condition should be attended to immediately once the symptoms occur because it may lead to seizure, coma, and can be life threatening when left untreated.  Read on to learn how to treat hypoglycemia.

How to Cure Hypoglycemia

At the onset of the attack, cure it by raising your blood glucose level quickly by drinking or eating atleast 15-20 grams of quick acting sugar like:

  • 4 ounces or half cup of fruit juice
  • 4 ounces of regular soft drink
  • 4 glucose tablets
  • 5 saltine crackers
  • Hard candies

After consumption of any of the following, wait for atleast 15 minutes and then test your blood sugar level.  Consume any of the following foods and drinks again if hypoglycemia is still present.  After your sugar level has risen, continue eating regular diet to keep it within the normal level.

Home remedies and homeopathy remedies wise, there are researches saying that vitamins like magnesium, chromium, and Vitamin B can help in treating the condition by boosting your energy thus maintaining ample amount of your blood glucose level.

Like mentioned above, hypoglycemia can be very severe to the point of losing one’s consciousness.  In such a case, remember to the following treatment:

  • Administer glucagon to increase blood sugar level.
  • Never inject insulin.
  • Never give them any food or drink by mouth.
  • Rush the patient to the nearest medical facility as possible.
