But once these cells line outside the uterus – ovaries, fallopian tube, the intestines, and the pelvis region (pelvic endometriosis) it results to a female health disorder called endometriosis.

There are several types of endometriosis, but pelvic endometriosis is the most common that women experience. Although this is not life threatening, it can bring a great pain and discomfort to the sufferer and can affect pregnancy thus causing infertility. Learn more as we tell you about endometriosis and pregnancy – signs and symptoms, cause, and treatment.

What Causes Endometriosis and Its Risk Factors

Like any other diseases, the exact cause why endometriosis happens is not known. However, its occurrence is linked to some possible factors such as the following:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Retrograde menstrual flow
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Triggers such as chemical exposure

Women who have started their period at a young age, those who have never been pregnant, and those who have longer periods are at great risk for the disease.

What are Its Signs and Symptoms?

While some women do not feel any symptoms at all, pain is one of the most reported complaints by women who are suffering from the condition. Pain is usually felt in the abdominal area which radiates into the lower back and the pelvic region. Some of the genera symptoms felt by the sufferer include:

  • Intestinal or abdominal cramping
  • Pain while or after sexual intercourse
  • Painful urination or bowel movement
  • Spotting

Since the symptoms also mimic other symptoms such as abdominal, bladder, or bowel diseases, it is necessary that you seek medical help accordingly for a definite diagnosis of the disease through laparoscopy. Treatment Methods for Endometriosis

The methods for treating the problem are actually dependent on how severe the problem is. Interventions for mild symptoms may be focused on the use of anti-inflammatory drugs to provide relief from the pain. Exercise and relaxation techniques are also effective as a mode of relieving the painful symptoms.

But once it has gotten severe, there may be a need for other interventions apart from painkillers. Having said this, some options on how to cure it are:

  • Hormone replacements – through the use of birth control pills which can help stop your menstrual period and create a pregnancy-like situation. Progestine and Gonadotropin releasing hormone agonists may also be used to prevent menstruation.
  • Surgery – in order to remove the areas where scarring, this may be an option. Hysterectomy and laparotomy are the choices if you have severe condition. However, symptoms may still return after endometriosis surgery.

Complications such as large cyst in the area of the condition may be present as a result of the problem. Moreover, many say that there is a risk for cancer, but the incidence is very rare though. For more detailed information about the problem, then try to talk with your medical specialist to give you a hand accordingly.
