Though some women normally have smooth skin prior to conception, during pregnancy they tend to develop acne because of the hormonal changes that their bodies undergo. The sudden hormonal gush, progesterone and androgen levels to be specific, causes a pregnant woman’s oil gland to work subsequently.  So, what pregnant women do is to find ways on how to treat acne during pregnancy.  However, they worry because medications for pimples and acne might pose potential harm to the baby.  With that said, let’s take a look at some tips on how to get rid and how to prevent acne breakout using home remedy and some acne treatment which won’t affect the fetus.

  • Keep your face hydrated. Wash your face gently using a mild soap, twice a day. You can use a moisturizer that is non-oily so that it won’t clog your pores more.
  • The food that you eat makes a profound difference on your skin. Consume foods rich in antioxidants as these will help you flush toxins from your body as well as fight acne effectively. You can also add fruits, dark green leafy vegetables, salmon, olives, berries, etc in your diet.
  • Do not squeeze your pimples as this will just aggravate your acne condition.
  • Have a clay facial mask once a week.  This too can help you reduce the oiliness of your face.
  • Exercising can also help on how to cure acne.   By doing this, your blood circulation will be improved making your skin healthy as well.
  • Drink plenty of water.

Acne Treatment to be Avoided During Pregnancy

Some skin care products promise to be safe for you and your baby, however if you are pregnant you must not give in to them without consulting your doctor as the condition may only get worse for you and your unborn child. Below are some of the acne treatments that you should avoid:

  • Accutane or Retin A – these drugs are derived from Vitamin A.  They are proven to have contribution to some birth defects when used while pregnant.
  • Tetracycline
  • Oral Isotretinoin

Acne during conception tends to clear up in the second and third trimester of pregnancy.  Just wait for it to slowly subside.  Your health together with the growing baby inside you should not be put at risk, that’s why you must take precautions seriously.
